Just a short minivan ride and the majestic view of the Apuan Alps will be before your eyes: tall and towering rugged mountains, home of the world famous marble caves of Carrara, this is the place for where Michelangelo took the blocks of marble from which he carved his timeless masterpieces. Approaching the town of Carrara, you will have a clear view of the caves from below, the view is almost surreal: you will be surrounded by sparkling white mountain slopes from where the man mines the precious rock since the ancient roman times. You will also have chance to visit a small laboratory and learn a lot about the process of extracting, transporting and carving the marble as well as receiving information about the hard life and work of the miners. A short walk will take you to the village of Colonnata where you will sample one of the most precious and famous culinary products, the “Lardo di Colonnata”.
